The Senate opens the debate to end the ‘golden pensions’
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s initiative reached Congress. Its objective: to end the millionaire lifetime checks that former officials from companies such as the CFE, Pemex or Luz y Fuerza receive.
Morenoist senator Pavel Jarero Velázquez confirmed the process. Once the proposal is formally received, the analysis will begin to eliminate these benefits considered disproportionate.
“The proposal contemplates establishing a maximum limit of up to 70 thousand pesos per month,” Jarero explained about the limit for former officials who held positions of trust.
The figure is revealing. According to the legislator, these schemes cost the treasury approximately five billion pesos a year. Money that, in theory, could be redirected to social programs.
Here comes the interesting thing: the initiative proposes modifying article 127 of the constitution. That is why it will first go through the Labor and Legislative Studies commissions before reaching the plenary session.
A classic exercise in historical memory: how many times have we heard similar promises? The difference now is that it comes from the Executive and has a majority in Congress. Skepticism, however, is free.
Meanwhile, former officials who enjoy these golden perks will have to follow the debates very closely. Your juicy monthly pension is officially in the crosshairs.
