President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that, once the Soccer World Cup is over, health specialists will attend the morning conference to expose the dangers of excessive use of social networks and digital platforms in girls, boys and adolescents in Mexico.
Platform regulation
A debate will be opened – with the participation of Congress and the media – about control of the platforms, who has it and how that power is concentrated. The discussion will include surveys of mothers and fathers. Based on the results, the use of social networks in schools will be regulated, for example with national limits on the use of cell phones in classrooms.
Artificial intelligence will also be analyzed: how it advances, what is happening in the world and what standards exist. Sheinbaum stressed that the initiative seeks to protect health, not censor. “There are abuses on the networks that should not be allowed. It is not censorship, it is the right to information and health care,” he said.
Planned actions
Once the World Cup is over, experts will warn families about the development of AI, without falling into censorship. The position had already been anticipated in presidential tours of Tabasco and Baja California, where children were urged to reduce screen time and practice sports outdoors.
The high number of hours in front of screens is worrying. On June 17, the president had already expressed concern because children and adolescents spend more time watching videos than playing, studying or living as a family. He stressed that there is no artificial intelligence law in Mexico and that it is necessary to create it through dialogue with parents and teachers.
Impact on health and socialization
It was warned that prolonged exposure to screens has consequences on physical health and the ability to socialize. The regulation will seek to balance access to technology with child well-being, without affecting the right to information.
