The political choreography of “do not fear”
In a display of magical realism that Gabriel García Márquez would have found somewhat exaggerated, President Claudia Sheinbaum met with Senator Adán Augusto López. The main theme? Apparently, everything but the elephant in the room with an XXL-sized arrest warrant. Because, what better time to discuss the modification of the Customs Law than when your former right-hand man is accused of directing a criminal cartel? Priorities, dear friends, priorities.
With a serenity that rivals that of a Zen master, Sheinbaum vehemently denied that the meeting had even hinted at the senator’s possible departure from his comfortable coordinator’s chair. His argument, a gem of internal democracy: it does not belong to her, because he was elected by the legislators. Oh! It seems that the era of the finger is over, replaced by a new era where coordinators emerge from ethereal assemblies and immaculate votes. What a relief to know that those practices are in the past, right?
The legislative agenda: the perfect refuge
While the country speculated about the links between a powerful senator and an alleged criminal leader, our protagonists decided that what was really urgent was to review the Economic Package and the Amparo Law. Of course. Who needs to address national security scandals when you can debate tariffs and court proceedings? The legislative agenda is the perfect umbrella to hide from any shower of uncomfortable questions.
Sheinbaum, in her role as civics instructor, kindly reminded us that “Everything has to be sustainable”. A statement so profound it almost made you cry. Of course, because in this country, investigations have always been characterized by their impeccable rigor and their total independence from political ups and downs. The Attorney General’s Office and its counterpart in Tabasco must feel so moved by this show of blind faith in their work.
The icing on the cake was the solemn declaration that if the senator has something to declare, then let him declare. A bold stance, no doubt. It is the political equivalent of “if the river makes noise, it is because someone is recording a TikTok.” The analytical depth is simply overwhelming.
Meanwhile, the arrest warrant against Hernán Bermúdez Requena, the former Secretary of Security of Tabasco and alleged mastermind of “La Barredora”, is still there, floating in the air like a bad smell that no one wants to admit they smell. But hey, they’ll be sending out the electoral reform initiative soon! That will undoubtedly calm the waters and make us all forget the small details about organized crime infiltrated in high places.
In short, we attended a master class in how to dance on the tightrope of a scandal without falling. The message is clear: let’s talk about laws, economic packages, anything… except the obvious. Because in modern politics, the best strategy is sometimes to pretend that the fire around you is simply an art installation.
