A Strategic Clarification on Security Matters
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, made a very relevant point in the field of international cooperation against organized crime. During her morning press conference, the federal president made it clear that the Government of Mexico did not participate in the extensive operations recently announced by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of the United States. These actions, of national scope in United States territory, resulted in the seizure of illicit substances belonging to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), with an estimated value of around 29 billion pesos.
When asked specifically about a possible bilateral collaboration between the Mexican Security Cabinet and North American agencies for this decisive coup, Sheinbaum’s response was direct and unambiguous: “No, it is a report given by the DEA there, because it was done there in the US.” This statement delimits the responsibilities and scope of the action, placing it exclusively as a domestic operation executed by the United States authorities within their own jurisdiction.
The Scope of the Blow Dealt to the CJNG
According to official reports released by the US Anti-Drug Agency, this five-day offensive was deployed in multiple locations throughout the United States. The result was the seizure of dozens of tons of narcotics and psychotropics, whose value on the black market was estimated at 1,450 million dollars, a figure that is equivalent to the aforementioned 29 billion pesos. In addition to the financial impact due to the value of the seized merchandise, the operation included the arrest of 670 individuals allegedly linked to the logistical and operational structure of the Mexican cartel on US soil.
Although the DEA refrained from providing an exhaustive list of the cities intervened, various regional offices of the institution offered clues through their social media channels. The images and photographs published show massive drug seizures attributed to the CJNG, with locations ranging from the west coast, in San Diego, California, to the east coast, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This geographic dispersion demonstrates the vast distribution network that the criminal organization has established within the United States and the forcefulness of the response of federal agencies.
Analysis of the Mexican Posture and its Implications
President Sheinbaum’s clarification is not mere protocol information; It has profound geopolitical and security implications. By delimiting the participation of the Mexican government, a position of sovereignty and non-interference is reaffirmed in matters that, although involving a criminal actor based in Mexico, were executed under the laws and capabilities of another country. This positioning is crucial in the complex framework of the bilateral security relationship, where collaboration exists but must be clearly defined to avoid misunderstandings or perceptions of subordination.
From a technical perspective, the effectiveness of the DEA operation demonstrates the sophistication of the intelligence and interdiction mechanisms available to US agencies. However, it also highlights a persistent challenge: the ability of cartels to produce and move monumental volumes of drugs across the border. The fact that a coup of such magnitude is carried out without direct and synchronized collaboration with the authorities of the cartel’s country of origin raises questions about the sustainability of this type of isolated successes and the need for a comprehensive and joint strategy that attacks the problem from its roots, including production, financing and money laundering.
The public refusal to claim any participation can also be interpreted as a message directed to multiple audiences. For the Mexican population, it reinforces the image of a government that acts with transparency and defines its limits. For the international community, it sets the terms of cooperation. And for the criminal organizations themselves, it could be a sign of the existence of red lines in collaboration between nations, although this does not imply a decrease in national efforts to combat them. The balance between necessary collaboration and strategic autonomy continues to be a fundamental pillar in the security policy of the Mexican state.
