President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) must exhaust all lines of investigation in the reopening of the ABC Daycare fire case, which occurred in June 2009 in Hermosillo, Sonora. The incident caused the death of 49 minors.
“The prosecutor’s office has to reach the ultimate consequences in this case… Whatever the prosecutor’s office asks for, let it be above all in the hands of the Mexican Social Security Institute, because it must be delivered, if all the information is not available,” declared the head of the Executive at a press conference from the National Palace.
Criticism of the surrogate daycare scheme
Sheinbaum Pardo pointed out that during the administration of former President Felipe Calderón there was corruption and nepotism in the management of daycare centers. “(The daycare service) was privatized and companies associated with governors or federal officials linked to receiving the resource were created, and they were the ones who provided the service with enormous corruption and nepotism,” he explained.
He added that the surrogate daycare centers did not meet the same safety standards as those operated by the IMSS. “The regulations that applied to IMSS daycare centers were not applied to surrogate daycare centers, which is why they were built in spaces that did not have the necessary civil protection,” he said.
The scheme, according to Sheinbaum, consisted of the IMSS paying the private sector and the latter taking care of child care in places without adequate conditions. “That, among other things, unfortunately led to the tragedy at ABC Daycare,” he concluded.
