The Zócalo was a party and Shakira was the queen
Almost two decades after her first concert there, Shakira returned to the main square of Mexico City and this time she made it bigger. Much bigger. About 400 thousand people gathered on Sunday to see her close her Las Mujeres No Ya Lloran tour. That’s not just a number, it’s practically an entire city vibrating to the same rhythm.
The figure, confirmed by the authorities, included people inside the Zócalo, in the surrounding streets and in front of the giant screens of the Monument to the Revolution and Alameda Central. People who endured the sun, who camped for days… pure devotion.
“This is a dream,” Shakira said from the stage. “Thank you very much to everyone who has been camping early in the sun. As always, overcoming all obstacles, together with me.”
A show for history
The show was free, organized by the CDMX government and Grupo Modelo as part of the 100 years of Corona. And what a show it was: costume changes, pyrotechnics, a giant inflatable wolf and a setlist that covered her entire career, from “Where are you heart” to the live premiere of “Algo tú” with Beéle.
Even President Claudia Sheinbaum stopped by. He saw it discreetly from a window of the National Palace.
“How was yesterday’s concert?” he commented the next day. “The truth is, a super show, very nice… Shakira is very loved by Mexican families.”
To put it in context: in 2007, Shakira had already broken a record at the Zócalo with 210,000 attendees. Now it has almost doubled that figure. But this is just the icing on the cake of a historic tour.
This tour changed everything. Born after their highly publicized separation and legal problems, Las Mujeres No Ya Lloran became the most successful of their career. Only at the GNP Seguros Stadium it added 13 dates and more than 800 thousand tickets sold, breaking local records and even winning a Guinness for being the most successful Latin tour in history.
So there you have it. From Barranquilla to the world, and from the world to the crowded heart of the Zócalo. Shakira not only closed a tour; wrote another monumental chapter in his legend.
