Almeyda’s cycle in Seville comes to an end
The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán bench is empty again. This Monday, Sevilla FC made official what many already saw coming: Matías Almeyda is no longer their coach.
The decision comes after the 2-0 defeat against Valencia on Saturday. One more setback in a season full of bumps. The Andalusian club announced the departure “appreciating the work” of the coach and his team.
“Sevilla FC would like to thank Matías Almeyda and his team for their work in recent months and wish him the best of luck in his next professional challenges,”
Almeyda says goodbye with the team in 15th place, just three points off the cliff. The statistics are cold and forceful: only one win in the last eight games.
A goodbye with self-criticism
What was striking was the sincerity of the coach himself after the last game. He didn’t look for excuses. He assumed all responsibility in front of the microphones.
“I think that in the last two games we saw a team with little fight, something that had been giving us results such as self-love and dedication and there is a lot of fear of making mistakes,”
German said. And he added:
“With a lack of clarity it is difficult for things to go well.”
Their final balance: 32 games, 10 wins, 7 draws and 15 losses. Numbers that are not enough for a club with European aspirations. The Argentine arrived last June with a resume that included River Plate, Chivas and AEK Atenas.
Now, the locker room urgently needs a new helmsman. The visit to bottom team Oviedo, on April 5, is presented as a vital match to right the course and remove the ghosts of relegation.
The fans expect an immediate reaction. In Nervión, patience runs out as quickly as points in the standings.
