Members of the State Union of Workers at the Service of the University of Veracruzana (SETSUV) marched through the main streets of the center of Xalapa to demand the intervention of the governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle García, in order to unblock the labor conflict they have with the University of Veracruzana (UV), warning that more than 1,500 workers receive salaries below the current minimum.
During the mobilization, the general secretary of the union, Juan Mendoza Gutiérrez, pointed out that the state president continues to be the first authority of the Universidad Veracruzana, so she cannot separate herself from the salary problem that affects administrative and manual workers affiliated with the SETSUV. He stressed that the minimum wage has already exceeded the union tabulators and that no worker should earn less than what is established in the Constitution.
Within the framework of the negotiation process, the union reported that it requested and obtained a 30-day extension before the labor court for the outbreak of a strike, with the objective of carrying out an internal consultation among its members on the preliminary agreement signed with the employer. With this, the strike scheduled for February 2 was rescheduled for March 5 at 7:00 a.m. and, if no agreements were reached, it would break out in all the work centers where the UV is active.
Juan Mendoza explained that the consultation will be carried out in all the university regions of the state, including Xalapa, Veracruz-Boca del Río, Córdoba, Orizaba, Tuxpan, Papantla, Coatzacoalcos and Acayucan, among others.
The leader recalled that since November 4, 2025, the SETSUV presented its petition to the labor court, in which it demands a salary increase of 20 percent, the comprehensive review of the Collective Labor Contract and the leveling of the salaries tabulated in accordance with the minimum wage in force as of January 1, 2026.
Currently, he noted, around 1,500 workers who perform functions such as gardeners, typists, officials, midwives, announcers and radio operators receive salaries below the legal minimum. In contrast, the Universidad Veracruzana has proposed a 4 percent increase in salary and 2 percent in benefits, in addition to minor adjustments to the collective contract, a proposal that the union considers insufficient to solve the structural problem.
Finally, Juan Mendoza Gutiérrez reported that the SETSUV executive committee will remain in Xalapa and will hold a meeting with the State Secretary of Labor, as part of the efforts to reach an agreement before the new date set for the strike.
