Formal resignation
Deputy Sergio Mayer Bretón presented his irrevocable resignation from militancy in Morena on May 15. He requested the cancellation of his registration in the party’s national registry.
“This complaint is due to various reasons of a personal nature, and constitutes a declaration of will, which takes immediate effect,” states the document delivered to the National Commission of Honesty and Justice of Morena.
Previous suspension
The Commission had suspended his party rights after Mayer requested leave as a deputy to participate in a reality show. That decision generated annoyance among other Morenoist legislators, who asked for his expulsion.
Mayer was a federal deputy for Morena from 2018 to 2021. He lost his reelection bid and in December 2023 he joined Claudia Sheinbaum’s campaign.
Controversial background
In 2024, Luis Morales Flores, a merchant at the Central de Abastos, won the federal deputyship by tombola in Morena, but finally the candidacy was assigned to Sergio Mayer. At that moment, the actor thanked Sheinbaum “for the trust.”
The resignation occurs in the midst of an internal review process at Morena regarding the discipline of its members. So far, neither the national leadership nor the Honesty Commission have issued an official statement.
