“The World Cup returns to this land, to this stadium, and together with Canada and the United States we welcome the entire world, receiving the flags of the 48 nations qualified for the FIFA World Cup Mexico 2026.”
With microphone in hand, Hayek stressed the honor it represents for Mexico to host the first match of this soccer tradition. “We Mexicans are honored, very honored… Long live Mexico and long live football!” he expressed.
From the catwalk to the box
After her speech, she went up to the honor box where Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, was waiting for her. He placed the cup on a pedestal while the actress and the audience applauded. Then it was time for the teams to enter and the anthems of South Africa and Mexico, performed by Alejandro Fernández.
His participation was not accidental. Hayek served as a cultural and diplomatic figure, reflecting the weight of Mexico in the event. The ceremony marked the beginning of a cup that brings together 48 teams for the first time.
