US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Sweden for a meeting of NATO foreign ministers. The meeting occurs amid uncertainty about Donald Trump’s foreign policy and the future of the US military presence in Europe.
The visit is prior to the NATO leaders’ summit scheduled for July in Türkiye. The context includes tensions over the war in Iran, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and Trump’s constant criticism of his allies, including statements about Greenland.
Contradictory military movements
In recent weeks, Washington canceled the deployment of thousands of troops to Poland and Germany. However, Trump surprised by announcing on social media the sending of 5,000 additional troops to Poland. The contradiction generated confusion among the allies about whether it was a reinforcement or a change in the redistribution of forces.
Rubio avoided clarifying the details. Instead, he reiterated criticism of some NATO members for their stance on Iran. He accused countries like Spain of denying the use of US military bases and questioned the lack of support to protect the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil trade.
NATO reaction
Despite the uncertainty, NATO assured that the military adjustments are part of plans discussed for a long time and do not represent a surprise. However, European leaders remain concerned about a possible gradual reduction of the American presence and a transfer of security responsibilities to Europe and Canada.
