Meeting in New Delhi to unblock differences
The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, and the Foreign Minister of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, met this Sunday in New Delhi. The meeting seeks to stabilize a relationship that is going through its most tense moment in more than two decades.
Frictions have intensified due to the tariff policies promoted by Donald Trump, which raised taxes on Indian products. Added to this is New Delhi’s unease over Washington’s rapprochement with Pakistan and China, as well as American pressure for India to reduce its purchases of Russian oil.
During a joint conference, Rubio stated:
India remains one of the most important strategic partners of the United States.
He added that he hopes to reach a bilateral trade agreement soon. Jaishankar, for his part, stressed that both nations act according to their national interests and defended the need to maintain multiple energy suppliers to guarantee affordable prices.
Commitment to safe maritime routes
Both officials agreed on the importance of keeping international shipping routes open and safe, especially given the tension in the Strait of Hormuz. India insisted it will continue to diversify energy sources as it seeks stability in markets and protection for global supply chains.
