The Nigerian army announced the rescue of 92 people who had been kidnapped by armed militiamen in Borno state, one of the regions hardest hit by extremist violence in the northeast of the country. Among those released there are 52 men, 33 women and seven children.

According to military spokesman Sani Uba, the victims were forcibly moved to bush areas when troops from Operation HADIN KAI intercepted the insurgents and launched an offensive to free them. The incident occurred in the Biu area.
The Nigerian military has intensified operations in Borno, where extremist violence has caused a severe humanitarian crisis. The actions seek not only to recover the victims, but also to dismantle the networks of armed groups operating in the area.
The conflict in Borno continues leaving a high number of kidnappings and attacks. The international community is closely monitoring the army’s efforts to restore security in this region marked by years of violence.
