Residente directs and Bad Bunny stars in epic drama ‘PORTO RICO’

The rapper and singer join forces for an epic film project about the island's history.

The cultural bomb of the year already has a name

And it’s called ‘PORTO RICO’. Imagine this: Residente changing the microphone for the camera, and Bad Bunny leaving the flow for his first leading role. Together, in a film that promises to shake more than a concert at the Colosseum.

The news arrived this Wednesday and already has everyone talking. It is not for less. The project is described as an “epic Caribbean western and historical drama”inspired by true events. I mean, get ready for something big.

“I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child,” Residente said in a statement. “This film is a reaffirmation of who we are, told with the intensity and honesty that our story deserves.”.

A cast that takes your breath away

But this isn’t just about the two of them. Check out this casting: Viggo Mortensen, Javier Bardem and Edward Norton are also on the list. Yes, you read that right.

Norton will not only act, but he will also produce. And his words about the project are worth framing:

“Everyone knows what a poet of language and rhythm René is. Now they are going to see what a visual visionary he is too,” he declared. “And reuniting him with Bad Bunny to tell the true story of Puerto Rico’s roots is going to be like a flame finding the stick of dynamite that has been waiting for it.”.

Behind the scenes, things are just as impressive. Residente co-wrote the script with Alexander Dinelaris, the guy who won the Oscar for ‘Birdman.’ And as executive producer is none other than Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

For Bad Bunny, this will be his first leading role after appearing in films such as ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ and ‘Caught Stealing’. His Super Bowl show already gave us a taste of what he can do when he celebrates his culture.

When is it recorded or released? That’s still a mystery. The only thing that is clear is that when this film arrives, it will leave its mark. It’s not just another project of celebrities making films. This seems like something personal, necessary and with all the pieces to be historic.

Tom Cruise transforms into ‘Digger’ under the direction of Iñárritu

Tom Cruise appears unrecognizable in the trailer for 'Digger', Iñárritu's new environmental comedy.

First look

Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Digger, the new film by Mexican Alejandro G. Iñárritu. It marks his return to English-language cinema since The Revenant and his first collaboration with Tom Cruise.

The trailer shows Cruise in the role of Digger Rockwell, a billionaire whose company triggers a global-scale ecological disaster. Far from the action hero, he appears with prosthetics, overweight, gray hair and a southern accent. His character is “the most powerful man in the world”, but also the main person responsible for the chaos.

The plot: Digger begins a race to convince the world that he can save humanity while trying to contain the disaster he himself caused. The trailer starts with a phrase from the protagonist:

“Everything changes. One day you are a king. The next, you are just ashes in a box.”

A key moment: Digger minimizes the displacement of a glacier in Greenland, ignoring irreversible consequences. John Goodman plays the president of the United States, who demands a solution to avoid the catastrophe.

The mix of black humor and political criticism was described by Iñárritu as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.”

The cast includes Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma D’Arcy and Sophie Wilde. Filming lasted six months in the United Kingdom, with photography by Emmanuel Lubezki in VistaVision format.

For Cruise, Digger represents a turnaround after more than a decade focused on franchises like Mission: Impossible and Top Gun. It is his first project with Warner Bros. since the agreement signed in 2024.

The film hits theaters on October 2.
