Progress in the repair work of the sinkhole
The repair work on the sinkhole located in the Renovación neighborhood, in the Iztapalapa mayor’s office, will continue for at least two more weeks, according to the information provided by those responsible for the work to the affected neighbors. The collapse, which opened under the passage of a delivery truck seven days ago, requires complex engineering interventions for its complete resolution.
Ulises, a resident whose home is located in front of the point of the incident, maintains direct communication with the team in charge. According to his testimony, he was informed that the rehabilitation strategy consists of the construction of a manhole that will later be connected to the main pipeline. “The architect mentioned that they are scheduled to receive the new conduction tube between Sunday and Monday, with the aim of starting the sealing work next week and being able to deliver the road within a period of 15 days,” he explained.
The incident and its immediate consequences
The event occurred when the delivery vehicle, which was headed precisely to the grocery store that Ulises operates from his home on 5th Street, was engulfed by the terrain. The merchant says that he witnessed the moment through his property’s video surveillance system. “I watched it through the security camera; a loud bang was heard and, when I turned to the screen, the floor had opened,” he recalls.
The magnitude of the work has completely transformed the appearance of the street. A 120-ton capacity crane and other specialized heavy machinery have occupied the space previously used by cars and pedestrians. As a security measure, access is completely restricted by metal retaining fences and wooden walls. The only movement allowed is that of truck trucks that transport bags of construction material essential for the work.
A Civil Protection command post of the mayor’s office has been established at the site, in charge of coordinating the work and supervising perimeter security. However, the personnel deployed at the site have declined to offer official information or technical details to the press, limiting themselves to indicating that “we cannot give any statement” in this regard.
Economic and social impact on the community
Beyond the interruption of traffic, the works have generated a significant economic impact for businesses in the area, particularly for the Ulises store. The owner reports a considerable decrease in sales and constant cleaning problems resulting from the work. “Yes, my sales have gone down, they are very low. In addition, we have to deal with dust and dirt all day; no matter how much we clean, everything remains dirty,” he laments.
The situation reveals the collateral effects that this type of emergency in the urban infrastructure generates in daily life and the local economy. For Ulysses and other merchants, the solution cannot come soon enough. Their main hope is that the completion of the repair and rehabilitation work will allow the normalization of their activities and the recovery of their family income.
This case highlights the critical importance of preventive maintenance of the water and drainage network in the city, as well as the need for agile and transparent response protocols by authorities to mitigate the effect on citizens.
