Raúl Jiménez’s most meaningful goal
Raúl Jiménez finally broke his goalless streak in World Cups. The Mexican forward scored against South Africa, but the celebration had a meaning that goes beyond the score.
Behind the tears is a story of loss and tribute. His father died last March, just as he was getting ready for what he considered “his World Cup.” The goal was not just a sporting goal, but an emotional need.
“It was something I was looking for, more than just scoring my first goal in the World Cup so I could dedicate it to my dad, who I think would be the happiest to have been here in the stadium,” declared Raúl.
The Wolverhampton footballer added that his father supported him from heaven. In an interview with the Mexican National Team, Jiménez revealed that before the game he asked Roberto Alvarado for a cross to the far post.
“Very happy to have been able to score this goal. In fact, before I told Piojo (Alvarado) ‘give me one at the second post and now I’m going to score it’ and look, we did it, I was able to score it. Very happy,” he concluded.
A long road to the goal
Jiménez had had minutes in Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, but he never managed to score. This time, with his father absent, the goal came loaded with emotion.
The Mexican forward ended his 12-year World Cup drought and dedicated the most important moment of his career to the person who always encouraged him.
