Pulp rises like a phoenix (or at least as a band that remembered it had fans)
After 24 long years (yes, long enough for a baby to graduate from college and have an existential crisis), the iconic Britpop band Pulp has decided that they do, indeed, still exist. Their new album, More, will hit platforms on June 6, because what better date for an epic comeback than Devil’s Day, right?
The band’s last album, We Love Life, came out in 2001, when the internet still sounded like a modem and Jarvis Cocker didn’t have gray hair. But, surprise, during a reunion tour in 2023, the frontman and his cronies rediscovered that they knew how to compose. “Hymn of the North“, a new song, fell from the sky during a rehearsal, as if fate had whispered to them: “Guys, might you try not to disappoint your fans again.”
A fast album, an eternal legacy (and a missed bassist)
Recorded in three weeks (yes, less time than it takes to decide what to watch on Netflix), More is Pulp’s fastest project. Could it be that after two decades, they finally learned to work under pressure? Or maybe they just wanted to make sure no one thought they were dead. Jarvis, in his typically modest style, declared: “It was made by four humans from the north of England.” Thanks for clarifying, Jarvis, because we all thought they were robots.
The album also pays tribute to the late bassist Steve Mackey, because, of course, what better way to honor a friend than by releasing an album after his departure. Of course, the first single, “Spike Island“, comes with a music video created with artificial intelligence, because why hire a director if you can let an algorithm do the work? Jarvis confessed that the experience marked him so much that he still has not recovered. Neither do we, Jarvis. Neither do we.
In addition to “Spike Island“, the album includes gems like “Tina“, “Grown Ups” and “My Sex” (because, obviously, a Pulp album without sexual references wouldn’t be a Pulp album). And as icing on the cake, the band will play two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl alongside LCD Soundsystem, because if you’re going to resurrect, do it in style.
