The candidate who wanted to be a victim (but the Prosecutor’s Office did not buy it)
José Hernández Cayetano, the candidate for mayor for the Party of Labor (PT) in Las Vigas de Ramírez, Veracruz, decided that the electoral campaign was boring for him and opted for a plot twist worthy of a soap opera: simulate his own kidnapping. Yes, as you read it. The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) summoned him to explain why his family reported his disappearance and then received suspiciously convenient calls asking for money for his release.
The script fell into the first plot hole
It turns out that, after investigating, the authorities discovered that self-kidnapping was as real as politicians’ love of selfies. The candidate, who has also been active in Morena (because in politics second chances are the law), was taken before the Specialized Prosecutor in Combating Kidnapping. Of course, “respecting their human rights”, because even poorly acted dramas deserve due process.
Meanwhile, the state PT came out to defend him as if it were the end of Stranger Things: “We are not going to remove him from the candidacy,” said Vicente Aguilar, party coordinator, although the Prosecutor’s Office already has enough red flags to fill a stadium. Of course, the candidate’s son was the one who reported everything, so the mystery remains: was it an attempt to gain sympathy or just an electoral tantrum?
The scandal comes in the midst of the renewal of 212 mayorships in Veracruz, because what would an election be without a little drama? Of course, the Prosecutor’s Office has not released more details so as not to ruin the cliffhanger.
