The offer that divided opinions
Poncho de Nigris wants to buy Merlin the duck, the bird that became a sensation during the Mexican National Team celebrations. The influencer first offered 500 thousand pesos and then raised the amount to 800 thousand.
The proposal generated a strong debate on networks. Some users see it as an economic opportunity for the duck’s family, while others reject the idea of selling it.
Since appearing in the Angel of Independence, Merlin has gone from being a local mascot to a viral figure. His owner, Karla, walked him along Paseo de la Reforma wearing a Tricolor t-shirt while selling water.
“The duck lasts a maximum of seven years if they take good care of it. The World Cup is over in a month and the duck becomes history, and with that wool they fix up their house and buy another set of better clothes,” De Nigris wrote in X.
Faced with criticism, the businessman defended his position and assured that his intention was to make Merlin the mascot of Ring Royale, one of his projects. He warned that the offer would only be valid as long as the World Cup fever lasted.
“We are nowhere near. Half a million friend and soon you will shit my entire house, but because of the value now I forgive you as a RR mascot,” he added in another message.
He then confirmed that he was already in contact with Karla’s representatives and increased the offer to 800 thousand pesos. “We’ll probably see each other this weekend,” he said.
The Peking duck Merlin went viral when he walked along Paseo de la Reforma during the celebrations. His fame captivated hundreds of users and placed him among the trends in the country.
