The drama of the 2025-2026 school year
The proposal of the SEP, headed by Mario Delgado, to close the school year on June 5 instead of July 15, has set off alarms. The Neoleonese Union of Parents did not remain silent. Their verdict: This is an academic and family disaster.
“The significant reduction in effective class time in the 2025-2026 school year could affect the academic development of girls, boys and adolescents. We especially value the position of privileging that students can conclude their school year appropriately, without doing so in a hurry or without pedagogical support,” they released in a statement.
The federal government justifies the movement with two bullets: the high temperatures expected in June and July, and the logistics of the 2026 Soccer World Cup, which will have venues in Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City. But parents see something else: a political move disguised as protection.
The alternative that sounds more sane
The New Leonese parents propose an intermediate date: June 19. They argue that it is a middle ground that takes care of the kids without sacrificing learning.
“A date like June 19 represents a more balanced alternative, since it allows the integrity of students to be protected without seriously compromising the educational process. Nuevo León and Mexico face significant challenges in terms of learning. The reduction of several full weeks of class represents a setback in efforts to strengthen fundamental skills such as reading, mathematics and comprehension,” they stated.
And it’s not just a matter of classrooms. Families organize their lives around the school calendar. Changing it suddenly is like moving the pieces on the board without warning.
“Families organize their work, economic and care life based on the previously established school calendar,” they warned.
The dilemma is served: protect students from the heat and chaos of the World Cup, or maintain educational quality? The parents have already chosen sides. Now, the ball is in the SEP’s court.
