A sincere talk about love (and prejudice)
Ludwika Paleta and Juanpa Zurita are in promotion mode, but the conversation got interesting. Talking about their new movie Do you want to be my girlfriend?, they ended up reflecting on something very real: relationships with an age difference.
And it turns out that they both have experience on the subject.
“I have always liked men older than me, although not much,” says Ludwika.
“I like them bigger,” Juanpa admits openly.
Life imitates art
The coincidence is curious because in the film – a sequel to Do you want to be my son? – they play just that: a couple where she is 20 years older. The plot follows their confusions as people mistake them for mother and son, and they deal with family prejudices.
But off screen, his position is clear: everyone does what they want with their lives.
“Let people do what they want with their lives. The thing is that certain questions come later,” says Ludwika. “But it’s not for nothing that like-minded people come together.”
Beyond comedy
Although they acknowledge that it is a fun film, they both emphasize that it touches on serious topics: rejection, social acceptance, and how we perceive love differently.
For Ludwika, 47 years old and with a 26-year-old son, there is a special perspective:
“You always want them to behave up to standard because that also speaks about you, but in the end what matters is that they are happy.”
Love evolves
The conversation took a profound turn when Ludwika shared her insight on how feeling changes over the years:
“Love changes, that is clear to me. It is not the same as what you feel at 20… Love is just accepting, not wanting to change and being unconditional.”
Juanpa adds his perspective on external questions: he wants to believe that people do not do it out of evil, but from a (clumsy) attempt to protect. Although he acknowledges: “But it can generate negative things.”
What he is clear about is that relationships are key to growing – and his girlfriend, actress Macarena García (four years older), has been a fundamental part of that process.
Do you want to be my girlfriend? hits theaters this Thursday. It seems like it will be more than just a romantic comedy.
