Meeting at the National Palace
Relatives of the 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Normal School entered the National Palace this Thursday to meet with President Claudia Sheinbaum. The meeting occurred six months after his last meeting with the federal president.
“At 04:00 in the afternoon we see the mothers and fathers of Ayotzinapa, yes,” confirmed Sheinbaum during his morning conference.
The return of the GIEI to the table
One of the central topics was the possible reactivation of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI). In the previous meeting, in November, the federal government analyzed the return of two of its most recognized members: Carlos Beristáin and Ángela Buitrago.
Isidoro Vicario Aguilar, a lawyer representing a group of relatives, pointed out that the investigations are progressing “very slowly.” For this reason, the parents insisted on the need to have international support again.
Vicario declared: “The parents put it back on the table and the president’s response was that it has to be analyzed seriously, the issue of the return of the GIEI will be looked at with greater responsibility.”
Sheinbaum instructed his team to establish contact with the members of the mechanism. Although they acknowledged “little” progress, the relatives came out with a commitment, without additional details.
