The “Mouse” who did not want to play cat and mouse with justice
Washington DC, United States.- Ovidio Guzmán López, that crown prince of drug trafficking that we know so well (and that costs the public treasury so much to prosecute), has decided that the American courts do not deserve the spectacle of a trial worthy of Netflix. In a move that surprises no one, the scion of El Chapo signed a magical piece of paper agreeing to plead guilty, as if he were a child caught with his hands in the jar of cookies… if the cookies were tons of cocaine.
According to court documents (which, I assume, are papered with money prints), the boy was “informed” that there are charges against him. What a novelty! As if he didn’t know that since he was born in the golden cradle of organized crime, his destiny was this. But don’t worry: he has chosen the Northern District of Illinois as the setting for his surrender, probably because Chicago already has experience with charismatic gangsters. Al Capone, but with less style and more Instagram filters.
Rule 20 or how to avoid the embarrassment of a media trial
All of this is covered under Rule 20, that beautiful regulation that allows the accused to say “yes, I am guilty, but let’s do it quickly and without cameras, please”. The document, which looks more like a school apology note than a legal agreement, includes this gem: “I wish to plead guilty to the crime charged.”. How generous, Ovid. As if he had any other option after the DEA spent years collecting evidence as if it were stickers from the album “The Most Wanted Narcos.”
The best thing is that the paper includes the signatures of prosecutors from New York and Illinois, confirming that even bureaucrats in the judicial system can agree… when the defendant saves them the work. El Ratón, extradited in 2023 (after an international effort comparable to hunting a legendary Pokémon), now faces his destiny with the same elegance with which his father escaped through tunnels: surrendering, but choosing the place.
And so, between legal procedures and waiver of lawsuits, the heir to the Sinaloa empire demonstrates that, in the end, even drug traffickers prefer the shortcut. Redemption? No. Strategy? Probably. Irony? Absolutely.
