Priorities in cash
The plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies had time this Wednesday. With an overwhelming majority of 452 votes in favor and only one against, they approved the minting of three commemorative coins for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
One will be made of pure gold, another of pure silver and a third bimetallic. Nominal values: 25, 10 and 20 pesos. But their real value, as collectibles, will be very different.
“These coins celebrate something very Mexican, the fans,” he justified the proposal.
The Bank of Mexico now has 90 days to design them. Thirty days later you can start minting them. Everything ready to celebrate an event that will occur in two years.
What is not said in the statement
While the exact weight of gold and silver is being discussed, other Congress tables have pending issues. Collective memory is short, but the precedents are there: how many “urgent” projects sleep eternally in commissions?
There is talk of strengthening national identity and promoting savings. Curious mechanism to save: buying precious metals with symbolic face value. The irony would be delicious if it didn’t come with an official seal.
Timing is always educational. When institutions want us to look on the bright side, they often show something that literally shines. Gold for football. Silver for the show. And a vote against that must feel very alone in that chamber.
