A night to remember
Minutes after seeing Álvaro Fidalgo debut with Betis, Mexico had another reason for joy. Obed Vargas, one of the jewels of Aztec football, stepped onto the pitch for the first time as an official player of Atlético de Madrid.
The match was in the Copa del Rey, quarterfinals. With the score already resolved in favor (0-4), Diego Simeone looked towards the bench. There was Vargas, with the number 21 on his back, waiting for his opportunity.
At minute 78, ‘Cholo’ gave him the go-ahead. The Mexican took the field replacing Ademola Lookman, first receiving the last instructions from his coach.
On social networks, the emotion was immediate. Mexican fans celebrated seeing him with the red and white shirt and remembered other compatriots who wore those colors: Hugo Sánchez, Luis García, Raúl Jiménez…
Hungry for the ball
In his few minutes in the game, Vargas showed character. He constantly sought to have contact with the ball and did not hesitate to give instructions to his teammates. A brief but intense debut.
At the end of the meeting, his first gesture was to look at the sky. A silent gratitude for fulfilling a dream that many young footballers pursue all their lives.
This debut comes at a key moment. Vargas aspires to be on Javier Aguirre’s final list for the World Cup, and every minute in a team like Atlético adds points in his favor. The young Mexican’s career has just taken an important leap.
