Neymar out of the friendly before the World Cup
The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed that Neymar will not travel to Cleveland for the preparation match against Egypt, scheduled for Saturday. The 34-year-old forward will remain in New Jersey to continue physical therapy treatment.
The team doctor reported last week that he was expected to be out for two to three weeks with a calf injury. Brazil will debut in the World Cup on June 13 against Morocco in East Rutherford. There is no certainty that Neymar is fit to play.
His inclusion in the list of 26 called up was seen as a risk due to his physical condition. He is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, but has struggled to regain his best since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in October during a qualifying match.
“He has experience in this type of competition, the affection of our group, he can create a better atmosphere,” said coach Carlo Ancelotti when announcing the call.
The Italian strategist had not called him since he took over in May 2025. Neymar has played eight games for Santos this year, with four goals and two assists.
FIFA rules allow replacing an injured player up to one day before the first match. If he plays, it would be Neymar’s fourth World Cup.
Marquinhos assumes the captaincy
Midfielder Fabinho noted that Neymar “is fine, he is happy” and that he is “the leader of the group.” Meanwhile, defender Marquinhos, 32, was named captain of the Verdeamarela this week.
“You think of all the legendary captains who have worn the armband. It’s an honor,” said Marquinhos. “Being captain is not just about wearing the armband, it’s about contributing to the group and your teammates.”
The defender has just won his second consecutive Champions League with PSG.
