Neymar says goodbye to Brazil: he will not play for the national team again

Neymar announces his retirement from the national team after elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup.

Neymar confirmed that he will not wear the Brazil shirt again. The decision came after the team’s elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup, losing 2-1 to Norway.

The 34-year-old star spoke after the game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. “I tried. It started here, at MetLife Stadium, and it ended here. Now it’s over,” he said.

It was a symbolic closure. Neymar made his debut for Brazil on August 10, 2010 precisely in that same setting, in a friendly against the United States. Against Norway, he came off the bench and scored a penalty in the final minutes, but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

His participation in the tournament was limited. A persistent right calf injury sidelined him for three of the five games. He only played 15 minutes against Scotland in the group stage and appeared in the duel against Norway.

Brazil is now beginning a renewal process. A new generation will have to take over from who was their figure for more than a decade, slowed down in recent years by injuries.

Defender Marquinhos asked for time and support. “We ask that people be patient with the new generation and support them from the beginning,” he declared.

Mexico is out of the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16 against England

Mexico fell 2-3 to England and won its ninth World Cup without a quarterfinal.

The Mexican National Team did not make it to the quarterfinals in the 2026 North American World Cup. They lost 2-3 against England at the Mexico City stadium, which meant their elimination in the round of 16.

An illusion that went out

Javier Aguirre’s team arrived with great momentum after winning their four previous games (South Africa, South Korea, Czech Republic and Ecuador) without conceding a single goal. The fans dreamed of qualifying for the quarterfinals after 40 years. However, Mexico added its ninth consecutive World Cup without advancing to that phase. In Qatar 2022 they did not even make it past the group stage.

Recognition of Jesús Gallardo

Despite the defeat, the fans showed support. Jesús Gallardo, Toluca winger, traveled on a commercial flight to Tabasco and received a tribute from the crew.

“We celebrate his participation and we are proud to share this flight with him. Thank you for carrying the name of Mexico so high and for leaving everything on the field. May there be many more successes,” said a flight attendant over the loudspeaker.

The passengers also dedicated a cheer to him: “Chiquitibum a la bim bomb ba, Gallardo, Gallardo, ra ra ra.”

Mexico’s performance left mixed feelings: pride in the effort, but frustration for not breaking the barrier of the second round.
