Neymar says goodbye to Brazil: he will not play for the national team again

Neymar announces his retirement from the national team after elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup.

Neymar confirmed that he will not wear the Brazil shirt again. The decision came after the team’s elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup, losing 2-1 to Norway.

The 34-year-old star spoke after the game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. “I tried. It started here, at MetLife Stadium, and it ended here. Now it’s over,” he said.

It was a symbolic closure. Neymar made his debut for Brazil on August 10, 2010 precisely in that same setting, in a friendly against the United States. Against Norway, he came off the bench and scored a penalty in the final minutes, but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

His participation in the tournament was limited. A persistent right calf injury sidelined him for three of the five games. He only played 15 minutes against Scotland in the group stage and appeared in the duel against Norway.

Brazil is now beginning a renewal process. A new generation will have to take over from who was their figure for more than a decade, slowed down in recent years by injuries.

Defender Marquinhos asked for time and support. “We ask that people be patient with the new generation and support them from the beginning,” he declared.

Javier Aguirre says goodbye to the Mexican National Team after losing to England

Aguirre says goodbye with tears after losing 2-3 to England at the Azteca.

Farewell with tears

Mexico once again reached the round of 16 of the World Cup. Those led by Javier Aguirre fell 2-3 against England at the Azteca stadium, in a match that maintained excitement until the last minute.

Jude Bellingham, with two goals, and Harry Kane scored for the Three Lions. El Tri tried to react, but failed to equalize the score. Thus, the Mexican National Team has nine consecutive World Cups without reaching the quarterfinals. The last time was in Mexico 1986.

The “Basque” assumes its responsibility

After the elimination, Javier Aguirre appeared at a press conference. With a broken voice, he apologized for not having been able to give new joy to the fans.

“I know that it is my last game as coach of the Mexican National Team at the Azteca stadium and I say goodbye, I leave with great pride; I lived a large part of my football life here,” he declared.

Aguirre, 67, confirmed that this was his third and last stage at the head of El Tri. He also gave the place to his assistant, Rafael Márquez.

“Rafa is strong, I had him as a player, as a teammate and I think he is more than qualified. He is a very valuable boy, a great coach and he is going to show it; I hope he does better than we could do,” he expressed.

Regarding his future in the Mexican Football Federation, the “Vasco” preferred not to announce anything.

“I couldn’t even sit down and evaluate it, I need a couple of days and I need to be with my loved ones; from there, make a good decision, right now I don’t know, there are a lot of emotions,” he was honest.

The Mexican fans, once again, will have to wait four more years to break the barrier of the quarterfinals.

Belgium thrashes the United States and advances to the quarterfinals

Belgium eliminates the United States and will face Spain in the quarterfinals.

Belgium demonstrated offensive power by beating the United States 4-1 in Seattle, securing its ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup. The Red Devils will now face Spain, which beat Portugal 1-0.

Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring in the 9th minute after a cross from Nicolas Raskin. The Atalanta striker scored his double in the 33rd with a header from the left by Leandro Trossard. The United States had momentarily tied it in the 31st minute when a Malik Tillman free kick deflected off Hans Vanaken.

Vanaken, who had come on for the injured Amadou Onana, redeemed himself in the 57th minute by scoring with a mid-range shot. Romelu Lukaku, substitute for De Ketelaere, made it 4-1 in added time after an error by Chris Richards.

Belgian dominance was constant. Thibaut Courtois responded to attempts by Balogun and Berhalter, while an intervention by Nathan Ngoy prevented the discount. Christian Pulisic’s ankle injury at 59 further complicated American aspirations.

“It was not our day. We did not play like we have done on other occasions. We must give credit to Belgium,” Mauricio Pochettino told Fox.

Belgium, seeking its first world title after third place in 2018, left the tournament without hosts: the United States, Mexico and Canada fell in the round of 16. The duel against Spain is scheduled for Friday the 10th in Los Angeles.

Other quarter crossings

France will face Morocco, Norway against England, and the winner of Argentina-Egypt will face the winner of Switzerland-Colombia. Lionel Messi will start against Egypt this Tuesday in Atlanta.
