Goodbye to Schwarzenegger’s “action” (and no, it’s not Terminator this time)
It seems that not even Arnold Schwarzenegger’s muscles could save Fubar from Netflix’s relentless axe. The platform, known for its loving habit of canceling series as if they were trial subscriptions, decided that the second season of this spy “gem” did not deserve to continue taking up space on its servers. The reason? According to Variety, the audience abandoned it faster than a post-New Year’s exercise plan.
Let’s remember that in 2023, the first season was relative successful (read: enough for Netflix not to kill it immediately). But the sequel, released two years later—because suspense was clearly part of the strategy—failed to keep up the pace. It fell from Nielsen’s top 10 as if someone had pressed the “skip intro” button. Ironies aside, did anyone really expect that a series where Schwarzenegger plays a spy with his daughter (yes, that was the plot) would last longer than a viral meme?
The plot that no one asked for (but that still entertained us)
For the clueless: in Fubar, the former governor of California played Luke Brunner, a CIA agent who discovers that his daughter is also a spy. Original? No. Fun? It depends on how many times you’ve seen True Lies. The series mixed explosions, forced dialogue and “emotional” moments that, among us, seemed more like a nod to the filmography of the 90s than a product of the 21st century. But hey, at least Arnold didn’t have to dress up as a babysitter this time.
The funny thing is that Netflix invested enough to justify a second season, but then unceremoniously buried it. Was it the algorithm? An executive’s whim? Or was the world simply not ready for another dose of action in which Schwarzenegger grunts more than he talks? Who knows. The only thing clear is that fans of ephemeral series have a new mourning to celebrate (or regret, depending on how you see it).
What’s next for the streaming universe? Probably another canceled series in three months. In the meantime, the nostalgic can always rewatch Commando for the umpteenth time. At least there Arnold did guarantee a satisfactory ending.
