Double punishment for Mourinho after the controversial classic
José Mourinho will not be on the Benfica bench for the next two games. The Portuguese federation has fallen all over him after Sunday’s altercation against Porto.
The disciplinary board issued two separate sanctions. One for the direct red card he saw at the end of the 2-2 draw, and another harsher one for what happened afterwards.
Mourinho stated that he had tried to kick the ball towards the stands to celebrate, not towards the rival bench.
But the thing didn’t end there. What really cost him was the exchange of words with Luis “Lucho” González, Porto’s assistant. That’s why they gave him 11 additional days of suspension.
Details of the punishment and the club’s reaction
He serves the sanction for the red card this Saturday in Arouca. The 11-day one would leave him out against Vitória on March 21. And be careful, they are not fulfilled together – they are consecutive.
Benfica has already said that it will not remain silent. The club announced that it will appeal the resolutions, calling them “unfair and unjustified”.
And what exactly happened to Lucho González? According to the disciplinary report, Mourinho started the altercation by waving his fingers and repeating “you’re small.” González responded by calling him a “traitor”, a reference to when Mou led Porto to win the Champions League in 2004.
For his part, González was also sanctioned: one game and eight days of suspension.
Two football veterans, a rivalry that does not cool even with the years, and a bench that will be left without its star coach when it needs him most. The Portuguese classic continues to give something to talk about.
