Morena is still alone: allies distance themselves from the electoral reform
Ricardo Monreal, Morena’s coordinator in San Lázaro, threw in the towel this Monday. After several meetings, he admitted that he has no hope of convincing the PT or the PVEM to support the presidential initiative that will be discussed this week.
“The PT and the Green have already advanced their vote and I find it difficult for them to change their opinion,” said the Morenista leader during an interview in the legislative chamber.
The statement is a bucket of cold water for the ruling party’s plans. Monreal was clear: this is no longer a matter of negotiation. His allies made a public decision and Morena will have to respect it, even if it complicates the situation.
The cherry bench will continue forward, trusting only in its own votes to carry out the reform. A scenario that, according to Monreal, did not take them by surprise. The PT and the Green had already anticipated their position regarding the document presented by the president.
The result? Morena advances practically alone in one of the thorniest debates of the year. The coordinator insisted that the issue continues to be a priority for his caucus, but the lack of support certainly changes his calculations.
One more example of how political alliances in Mexico are as solid as a house of cards when it comes time for complicated definitions.
