Firm stance towards the United States
President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that Mexico will maintain a cooperative relationship with the United States, but without allowing acts of interference or violations of national sovereignty. During his morning conference, he stressed that both countries must guarantee a relationship based on mutual respect.
“We have to guarantee mutual respect. But also the relationship on the different issues that have to do with the government of the United States and the government of Mexico,” he said.
Sheinbaum confirmed that the dialogue is still open. Even with President Donald Trump, although recent contact has occurred through Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The communication has allowed the Mexican position to be clearly established.
Rejection of interference
The president was forceful when referring to requests for detention for extradition purposes. “We make our position very clear. We do not want interference,” he stated. He warned that there are far-right sectors in the United States that seek to fracture the bilateral relationship.
“There are certain sectors that want that relationship to be broken and we are seeking that, with our very clear principles, that relationship continues for the good of the people of Mexico and the people of the United States,” he said.
Cooperation in security and trade
Despite the tensions, Sheinbaum highlighted that bilateral ties are advancing on strategic issues such as security and trade. Recent statements by US officials and scheduled meetings reflect that the relationship is ongoing. “We cannot allow interference. We cannot allow the violation of our sovereignty,” he reiterated.
