A dream of 40 years
Mexican fans have not seen their team in the Quarterfinals of a World Cup for four decades. That desire gains new strength now that the Tricolor plays at home.
This Thursday, June 11, Mexico welcomes South Africa at the Ciudad de los México Stadium, with 85 thousand fans and an enthusiasm that unites 180 million people. Javier Aguirre’s team arrives undefeated this year: six wins and two draws.
“There is no small rival, but we have to overcome them by doing things that we do lately. It is the reunion with the fans and the whole table is set to have a good inauguration,” declared Aguirre.
The debut against South Africa
The 2026 World Cup expanded its format to 48 teams, and Group A looks accessible to Mexico. However, the coach asks for restraint.
“One, when you are a favorite, cannot go crazy. This is 90 minutes, channeling your emotions. It is important to win, but also how. This Mexico has clear ideas,” he added.
The opening match will be played at 1:00 p.m. (central Mexico time). The broadcast will be carried out by Las Estrellas, Canal 5, Azteca 7 and TUDN.
The Mexican National Team seeks to break a 40-year streak without reaching the top eight phase. With the support of their people and a solid team, the dream of the sixth game – before it was the fifth – seems closer than ever.
