El Tri reigns again (and makes the neighbors cry)
If you thought that Mexican soccer was only for memes and disappointments, Javier “El Vasco” Aguirre has just thrown down the gauntlet (and the drama) with a Gold Cup that has more twists than a 9 o’clock soap opera. Not content with winning the Nations League in March, El Tri decided that 2025 would be the year of their historic redemption, and what better way than by humiliating the United States in their own backyard. Yes, the same ones who look down on us in football… again.
From the Greek tragedy to the happy ending (with VAR included)
The match began as the worst of our collective traumas: Chris Richards (who, by the way, sounds like an influencer) put the gringos ahead in the 4th minute. But the world doesn’t end here, friends. Raúl Jiménez, in “I’m here to collect bills” mode, tied with a left foot shot that left the rival goalkeeper stiffer than a statue. And then, Edson Álvarez – the same one who almost gave us a heart attack with a disallowed goal – finished off the cocktail of emotions with the winning goal. Thank you, VAR, for not ruining our Sunday.
“We are champions, I said it from minute one. This gives consistency to what we have been saying” —Javier Aguirre, probably while he was burning his haters’ notes.
Records, tributes and a teenager who made us feel old
While you were still trying to upload a Reel without looking bad, Gilberto Mora, 16 years old, became the youngest player to play in an international final, snatching the title from Lamine Yamal and even Pelé himself. Achievements at 16 years old? You passed math by the skin of your teeth.
And as if the script were not loaded enough, Raúl Jiménez honored his friend Diogo Jota —who died days earlier— with a goal and a heartbreaking celebration: imitating his classic video game dance. The NRG stadium in Houston vibrated, and half of Mexico cried between the goal and the tribute.
Data that deserve a story
- Aguirre is now the coach with the most victories in El Tri (3 titles), surpassing Lapuente. Take that, football manuals.
- Mexico adds 13 Gold Cups. The gringos: they continue counting on their fingers.
- El Tri achieved the double Nations League + Gold Cup. Did someone say “era of dominance”?
Moral: When Mexican soccer stops being a joke, it becomes a pure epic. And Aguirre, between eyebrows, reminded us that the Tri shirt still weighs… a lot.
