Messi doesn’t stop making history!
The Argentine star continues to show that age is just a number. This Saturday, Lionel Messi scored a goal and provided two assists to become the fastest player to reach 100 goal contributions in MLS. His team, Inter Miami, beat Toronto FC 4-2, extending their winning streak as a visitor to six.
With 59 goals and 41 assists in just 64 regular season games, Messi shattered the previous record of 95, which was held by Sebastian Giovinco. In total, he has 87 goals and 57 assists in 101 games with the team in all competitions.
A team night
But not everything was the merit of the Flea. Rodrigo De Paul also excelled with a goal and two assists. His free kick in the 44th minute opened the scoring, after Messi gave him the charge. “Messi usually takes all the free kicks, but he passed the ball to De Paul,” who scored his third goal as a professional.
The Messi-De Paul duo enabled Luis Suárez to make it 2-0 in the 56th minute. The Uruguayan reached 32 goals in 63 games. Then, Sergio Reguilón scored his first goal with the team in the 73rd minute, assisted by Messi, to make it 3-0. And in the 75th minute, De Paul returned the favor: Messi scored his ninth goal of the season, one behind the league lead.
Toronto avoided a shutout with two goals from 20-year-old rookie Emilio Aristizábal, who has three goals in his first 11 games. The game was stopped a couple of times when fans jumped onto the field to get closer to Messi.
Today’s lesson: when the team works like a well-oiled machine, the records come by themselves. Let’s go Inter Miami!
