The epidemic that no one expected
The figures are brutal. In just three months and one week of 2026, Mexico already accumulates 8,901 confirmed infections of measles. That’s an increase of 137% compared to ALL of last year. The data from the Ministry of Health does not lie: we are facing a real health emergency.
“This figure represents an increase of 137% compared to the 6,464 cases reported throughout 2025”
But what is confirmed is just the tip of the iceberg. The surveillance system reports 21,860 additional probable cases. The disease is spreading like dry gunpowder.
Jalisco: the epicenter of drama
If this were a disaster movie, Jalisco would be the tragic protagonist. It accounts for more than half of the national confirmed cases (5,138) and has three deaths. With an additional 8,492 probable cases, the state is literally under viral siege.
Chiapas (730 cases), Mexico City (712 with one death) and the State of Mexico (283) complete this worrying map. The outbreak is no longer localized; It’s national.
Health authorities have applied more than 33.9 million doses from January of last year to current April. Intensive vaccination is the only card on the table.
But there is one fact that hurts: international organizations already point us out as the most affected country on the continent. The Pan American Health Organization has launched the red alert.
Specialists insist on the obvious but urgent: maintain extreme surveillance and reinforce immunization. Because behind every number there are families, vulnerable children, and a health system that is tested every day.
This is not just a cold statistic. It is the most dangerous theater where the consequences are measured in lives.
