Eight injured in car accident in Modena; driver suffered from mental disorders
A car hit several pedestrians on Saturday afternoon in Modena, northern Italy, leaving eight people injured, four of them in critical condition. The driver tried to flee but was detained by the police. Local authorities reported that the individual was already known to mental health services.
The person responsible was identified as Salim El Koudri, a 31-year-old second-generation Italian, born in Bergamo and residing in the province of Modena. He is unemployed, although he has a university degree in economics. He was taken to police headquarters to give a statement while investigators evaluate whether he acted intentionally.
No extremist links, under psychiatric investigation
At a press conference on Saturday night, investigators ruled out that the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. His home was searched as part of the investigation. The prefect of Modena, Fabrizia Triolo, noted that El Koudri was treated by local mental health services for schizoid disorders. However, authorities stressed that initial indications point to possible mental instability, but require further verification. No links to extremist groups were found.
Mayor Massimo Mezzetti confirmed that there were no deaths, although four victims remain in serious condition. A woman was trapped against a shop window and needed both legs amputated. The investigations continue to clarify the dynamics of the event.
