The Moroccan feat in Monterrey
Nobody saw them as favorites, but Morocco showed once again that football is written with stories of resistance. The Atlas Lions eliminated the Netherlands in the round of 32 of the World Cup, on a night that combined drama, emotion and an unforgettable ending at the Monterrey Stadium.
The score ended 1-1 after 120 minutes. Everything was defined from the eleven steps. There the figure of Yassine Bounou emerged, who saved the decisive penalty and led his team to the next round. The 2-3 in the round sealed the classification.
From the beginning, Morocco took control of the ball. The midfield, with Bouaddi, Ounahi, Saibari, El Khannouss and El Aynaoui, imposed conditions and limited the Dutch. The Netherlands opted for order and speed, but found no space.
The second half increased in intensity. Achraf Hakimi shook the crossbar with a shot. However, in the 72nd minute, Cody Gakpo put the Europeans ahead with a precise finish. The forward dedicated the goal to his son, who died days ago. It was an image that moved everyone.
It seemed like the final blow, but Morocco did not give up. In the 91st minute, Issa Diop appeared with a header that beat Verbruggen. The tie unleashed euphoria in the stands.
Extra time did not break the tie. On penalties, Bounou saved the key shot and then Ismael Saibari scored the final one. The celebration was total.
Morocco will now face Canada in the round of 16. Monterrey said goodbye to its last World Cup match with a night of glory and resistance.
