Rafael Márquez’s next step
Rafael Márquez is already outlining his project as the future coach of the Mexican National Team. After the 2026 World Cup, where Mexico will host led by Javier Aguirre, the current technical assistant would take the reins of the Tricolor. This plan has gained strength over time, and Márquez is preparing by surrounding himself with key figures.
According to information from Paco Arredondo, from Televisa, the former Barcelona player will integrate three former teammates into his coaching staff: Andrés Guardado, Alfredo Talavera and Aarón Galindo. They all met him at different stages with the National Team and have worked on their preparation to join the project.
“Part of his coaching staff would be Guardado, Talavera and people with whom he has been developing; even Aarón Galindo, who has a very good relationship with Rafa himself, since when they are in Spain they meet very often,” said Arredondo.
Vision towards the 2030 World Cup
Márquez not only focuses on the player squad, but also on the formation of the technical staff for the cycle towards 2030. In 2026 he will experience his first World Cup from the bench as part of the coaching staff, an experience that he considers key to assuming the position of main strategist in the short term.
The continuity of the process initiated by Aguirre and the incorporation of recognized former soccer players in Liga MX seeks to maintain a solid foundation for the future of Mexican soccer.
