Security reinforcement in the southern area of Sinaloa

Given the increase in violent incidents in southern Sinaloa, state authorities agreed to redouble surveillance operations. Five thousand security elements will be added, and an intelligence cell will also be installed in Mazatlán to identify those who generate violence.

Strategies defined in the Peacebuilding Roundtable

During the Peace and Security Construction Roundtable, headed by interim governor Yeraldine Bonilla Valverde, the actions of the summer vacation operation were evaluated. New strategies were also defined to address insecurity in the region.

The state Secretary of Public Security, Sinuhue Téllez López, reported that the new deployments will be concentrated in the southern zone. The objective is to strengthen prevention and surveillance, especially in areas with a higher crime incidence.

The Safe Summer operation has more than 18 thousand federal, state, municipal and relief corps members. According to the official, it will be reinforced to better protect residents and tourists who visit Mazatlán on these vacations.

Governor Bonilla assured that coordination between the three levels of government will be maintained to guarantee the safety of Sinaloan families and visitors. At the end of the meeting, he toured an exhibition of paintings, alebrijes and carpentry work made by inmates of state prisons as part of their social reintegration.

Trump’s statements

US President Donald Trump joked this Friday about the possibility of imposing “a big tariff” on Mexico for lettuce allegedly linked to an outbreak of intestinal infections. He also targeted Canada for the smoke from its forest fires.

During a talk with journalists, he made the comparison in an ironic tone: “lettuce or smoke?” Then, laughing, he said he would prefer smoke. The statement came a day after announcing new 10% tariffs on products from 60 countries, including Mexico and Canada.

Comments about Mexico

The comment arose after confirming that analyzes of a batch of lettuce from Taylor Farms México, held in Laredo, Texas, were negative for the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) noted that an initially positive sample was a false positive. The alert had affected Mexican producers, especially in Guanajuato, after linking the lettuce used by chains such as Taco Bell with cases of cyclosporiasis.

Criticism of Canada

Trump also questioned the effects of the Canadian fires, whose smoke covered cities such as New York, Chicago and Detroit. He stated that he will ask Canada to take action and maintained that the problem had not arisen before. All this occurs in the midst of a trade policy marked by tariff threats towards its main partners.

The search mother Ceci Patricia Flores Armenta, founder of the Mothers Searchers of Sonora collective, reported that together with groups from Jalisco they located an alleged incineration site in the municipality of Ayutla. Multiple remains of human origin were found at the site.

No institutional support

The families requested assistance from the State Person Search Commission to go to the point. The request was rejected. Flores Armenta denounced on social networks that the authorities did not offer support, transportation, tools or resources to continue with the recovery of the evidence.
