Leipzig hits the table
Brajan Gruda and Christoph Baumgartner were the stars of a spectacular night. With a double each in the first half, they sealed a match that ended 5-0 and completely changed the fight for Europe.
The victory was not only overwhelming, it was a message. Leipzig went from fifth to third place in the Bundesliga, jumping directly into the Champions League places. And they did it against a direct rival, Hoffenheim, who started the night ahead.
“He took the initiative in spectacular fashion and came forward with his first really dangerous attack of the match,” he described the initial development.
Gruda, on loan from Brighton, opened the scoring in the 17th minute, taking advantage of a rebound. Four minutes later, Baumgartner headed home the second. From then on, it was a festival.
Austrian Baumgartner scored his second with a superb finish to make it 3-0. And Gruda, just before the break, put an end to any doubts with the fourth goal. Benjamin Henrichs closed the win in the second half.
For Hoffenheim it was a night to forget. They suffered their heaviest defeat of the season and were missing their key midfielder, Leon Avdullahu, absent for the first time this season.
Now Leipzig is third. Stuttgart is fourth. And the Champions League is closer than ever. When you play like that, with that hunger and that clarity, dreams become plans.
