A bitter point that tastes of little
Leipzig needed a victory. He looked for it tooth and nail, but in the end he could only rescue a 2-2 draw against a Wolfsburg that fought like a lion. A result that hurts in the race for the Champions League.
It could have been a defeat. Brajan Gruda emerged as the late hero in the 89th minute to equalize, and then goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt became the savior with a key last-gasp save. Breathe, fans.
“It’s a bitter result for us. We wanted the three points,”
Gruda said after the game.
The German’s words sum up the frustration in the locker room. Much more was at stake than a simple point.
The 90 minute roller coaster
Wolfsburg, struggling not to fall, surprised at the beginning of the second half with a goal from Mohamed Amoura. Leipzig seemed touched.
But sometimes football gives you gifts. An incredible mistake by rival goalkeeper Kamil Grabara gave the ball to Gruda, who assisted Yan Diomande to make it 1-1. Renewed hope.
The joy was short-lived. Mattias Svanberg, coming off the bench, put the visitors ahead again eight minutes later. Low blow.
Until Gruda arrived again, at the limit of time, to nail the final tie. That resilience is the only positive thing they take away from Red Bull Arena.
The table gets complicated
This setback causes Leipzig to fall to fifth place. They are now two points behind fourth place (Stuttgart) and just one above Leverkusen. With 12 dates to play, every point is gold.
Only the first four go to the Champions League. The margin of error has evaporated.
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg adds a vital point that moves it a little further away from the relegation zone. They fought as if it were a final.
Looking ahead: decisive week
There is no time for regrets. Next weekend comes another high-voltage test: they will host second-placed Borussia Dortmund.
Meanwhile, their direct rivals have apparently more affordable commitments: Stuttgart vs Heidenheim (last) and Leverkusen visit Unión Berlin.
The pressure is on.
In other results, Augsburg beat Heidenheim 1-0 with a late penalty. At the top, Bayern leads with a six-point advantage, but will face the next matches without its captain Manuel Neuer, who is injured.
For Leipzig, the season is decided now. Either they react with character against Dortmund, or they will see the dream of the Champions League slip away definitively.
