A debut that is now history
Mexico continues adding incredible chapters in Milan-Cortina 2026. Today’s name is Lasse Gaxiola, who at only 18 years old has just made his debut in the men’s giant slalom.
With that performance, the athlete became the youngest Mexican to compete in the Winter Olympic Games. But there’s more: this edition saw for the first time a mother and her son representing the country together. Sarah Schleper and Lasse, both with the tricolor flag.
After his historic descent, the Colorado-born athlete finished in 53rd position. His first descent was done in 1:27.23 minutes, improving notably to 1:20.85 on the second attempt.
“It was crazy bumpy and super long, I was very nervous. Once you push out of the starting gate the adrenaline takes over and it was a lot of fun,” Gaxiola commented on his experience.
The young man not only lived a personal dream, but also shared a track with his mother, something he described as “crazy.”
His sights, however, are on the future and leaving his mark. He wants to be an example for the new generations.
“It has been shown that Mexicans can compete, that we can ski. I am sure that there will be Mexicans much faster than me in the near future,” he confessed with a clear vision.
Gaxiola hopes that his path inspires other children and young people to get into this sport. His debut was not just a personal best; It was a message: Mexico is already here.
