When Hollywood glamor meets harsh reality
Ah, yes. Because nothing screams “millionaire lifestyle” like a $4 million property turned into a rodent theme park. An environmental assessment at Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa‘s Santa Fe estate revealed that they were living on what can only be described as the set of a horror movie… but without the budget for special effects.
According to documents obtained by TMZ (because, of course, if there is unhealthy-real estate drama, they will be there), the Department of Public Health found feces, nests and dead rodents in eight structures. Three garages, two small houses, three sheds and two vehicles… come on, a luxury combo for any rat with aspirations. And the main house? Impeccable, because obviously, if you are going to have an infestation, it better not get into the living room.
The virus that turned tragedy into a nightmare
Betsy Arakawa’s cause of death was confirmed as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare disease transmitted by rodents. In other words, basically, the worst souvenir that someone could take from their own home. Authorities believe he was infected in one of the infested areas, because what better place to contract a deadly virus than your own garage full of rats?
Meanwhile, Gene Hackman, who was already dealing with Alzheimer’s and heart problems, died six days later… without knowing that his wife had died. His pacemaker stopped working, closing a chapter as absurd as it was tragic. Because if this story teaches us anything, it is that money does not buy health… or common sense.
