Justice, with a quite peculiar sense of humor
It seems that in the State of Mexico justice has decided to apply a new modality of restorative justice: that of restoring the freedom of the accused. In a twist that no one, absolutely no one, saw coming (well, perhaps only those familiar with the peculiar Mexican judicial system), Karla “N” and Germán “N”, the wife and son of the famous Alejandro Germán “N”, better known as “Lord Pádel” for his innate elegance and manners typical of royalty, have regained their long-awaited freedom. A control judge, in an outburst of magnanimity, determined that the Prosecutor’s Office’s arguments to keep them behind bars were as weak as the morality of a soap opera character. Evidence? Those are for commoners, apparently.
A marathon hearing where the only thing that was exercised was patience
The scene took place in the Tlalnepantla courts, located in the picturesque Barrientos Penitentiary Center (an ideal place for a family reunion, without a doubt). For more than five hours, the Prosecutor’s Office tried to convince the judge that maintaining pretrial detention was a good idea. Their star argument: that if they released this padel dynasty, the victim and witnesses could be at “risk”. What a strange idea, right? Who would have thought that someone associated with a recorded and massively disseminated attack could be a threat. The judge, showing a logic that only the initiated can understand, decided that the real risk was to deprive the family of their freedom, changing the precautionary measure so that they can carry out their trial in freedom. The investigations, of course, continue, because in Mexico justice is slow, but freedom for some is surprisingly agile.
While his family regained their taste for outdoor life, “Lord Pádel” himself was not far behind in his search for immunity. The gentleman, demonstrating legal knowledge as impressive as his backhand, filed a federal protection to avoid something as mundane as an arrest. His faithful squire, Othón “N”, did the same. The strategy was a resounding success: both were released on August 18, after the authorities had the idea of detaining them at the Cancun Airport. Because, let’s face it, what better place to arrest a lord than in a tropical paradise when he tries to escape?
The origin of the legend: when paddle tennis becomes a martial art
This entire legal circus has its origins in a high-class cultural event: a Paddle Championship held on July 19 at the exclusive Club Alfa Pádel in Atizapán de Zaragoza. It was there where, before the astonished gaze of high society, Lord Pádel decided that the match was not exciting enough. The solution? Turn the court into a boxing ring. The crime they are charged with is attempted murder, a charge that sounds terribly serious for what some might mistakenly interpret as a simple “difference in competence.”
But a nobleman never fights alone. The initial aggression was joined, in an admirable display of teamwork, by an entourage of alleged members of the Lord’s private security, his partner Othón, and of course, his devoted family. The images, which went viral with the speed of a winning smash, showed this demonstration of family unity, including some charming alleged death threats that Alejandro Germán “N” dedicated to his opponent, Israel “N”. Nothing says “healthy sport” like promising to annihilate your opponent.
While the Germán family enjoys the outdoors, the victim, Israel “N”, has had to face less glamorous consequences. In public statements, the professor reported that the aggressions suffered will prevent him from pursuing his career, affecting his main source of income. A shame, certainly, but I suppose it’s the price to pay for having had the audacity to compete against padel royalty. At least we can take comfort in the fact that the judicial system prioritizes the comfort of the accused, a truly touching gesture.
Thus, the case of Lord Pádel leaves us valuable lessons: that a viral video is not necessarily conclusive evidence, that preventive detention is optional for some, and that in modern sport, the most effective tactic could be, after all, wearing your own safety equipment to “dialogue” with your opponent. A true example of civility and sportsmanship.
