When food becomes an unattainable dream
Ah, the Inegi, that organization that reminds us with cold and calculated data what we already know: living in Mexico is increasingly similar to participating in a reality show of survival. According to their latest figures, purchasing the basic food basket in urban areas now costs 2,453.34 pesos (yes, almost the same as a used iPhone in the Marketplace). And in rural areas? 1,856.91 pesos, which, translated into colloquial language, is equivalent to selling a kidney… or two.
What rose the most? What you least imagine
The 4.3% annual increase in urban areas and the 2.9% in rural areas are not abstract numbers: they are a reflection that even steak and pasteurized milk have become collector’s items. But don’t worry, Inegi, in its infinite wisdom, clarifies that this is “less serious” than in 2024. What a relief! You just have to tighten your belt… or just stop eating.
And in case anyone doubted it, the items that contributed the most to this inflationary feast were: eating out from home (because of course, who cooks nowadays?), beef steak (did you expect it to be tofu?) and, attention, pasteurized milk. Could it be that the cows are also on strike?
Multidimensional poverty, or how money is not enough for anything
The Inegi, in a burst of creativity, now also calculates the income poverty lines, which include non-food items. Because, surprise, people don’t just eat: they also need education, culture and even soap. The result? 3.6% more expensive in cities and 3.1% in the countryside. Of course, gasoline went down 1.2%, which is a consolation… if you can still afford a car.
And to close with a flourish, the organization reminds us that these figures are the threshold for measuring multidimensional poverty. Translation: if you were poor before, now you are poor with style.
