The General Council of the INE approved this Thursday the agreement to install the single polling station model in the 32 entities of the country during the 2026-2027 Electoral Process. Citizens will be able to cast, in the same space and under a single organization, their votes for both federal and local positions.
What does the model imply?
All polling station boards will operate under this modality in 2027. The experience of previous processes (2015, 2018, 2021 and 2024) served as a basis. The agreement defines rules for integration, location, operation, distribution of furniture, ballot boxes and documentation, as well as the flow of voters. It also includes surveillance of parties, independent candidates and observers, in addition to the simultaneous counting and counting of elections.
Specific accessibility conditions are incorporated for people with disabilities, older adults, pregnant women and other groups that require assistance, with the aim of guaranteeing free and secret voting.
“The measure protects the right to vote of citizens in transit and must be applied in both the federal elections and the corresponding local elections and is based on evaluations carried out by the Institute, which have proven that this amount is sufficient to meet the demand for the special polling stations,” indicated the Institute.
Tickets for special boxes
Another endorsed agreement assigned a thousand ballots for each position to be elected in each special polling station that will be installed on June 6, 2027. The measure seeks to serve voters in transit.
The General Council highlighted that with these agreements it remains up to date in the issuance of rules, procedures and coordination mechanisms that provide certainty to the electoral organization and demonstrate institutional strength for the 2027 elections.
