Referee controversy in the first leg final
The goalless draw between Cruz Azul and Pumas in the first leg final of Clausura 2026 left a new chapter of tension. Joel Huiqui, interim coach of La Maquina, responded firmly to Efraín Juárez’s statements about arbitration.
The Auriazul strategist had pointed out that Cruz Azul was one of the teams most favored by referee decisions in the league, recalling actions against Atlas and Chivas. Huiqui did not take long to reply:
“That’s what he said? They would have to fine him, right? You can’t talk about the refereeing. There’s no need to dirty the final. It was a wonderful final. Both teams deserve to be here.”
The light blue coach asked for transparency and prevented the comments from overshadowing an intensely contested series.
Confidence for the return and recognition of Keylor Navas
Despite the tie, Huiqui was optimistic about the match in Ciudad Universitaria. “We have the quality to win. The final is brewing and on Sunday we are going to win,” he stated. He highlighted the advantage of playing in the capital and hoped to win the tenth star.
He also praised Pumas goalkeeper Keylor Navas, a figure of the game with several key saves. “He scored every goal. He is a great goalkeeper. We will analyze what we did right and wrong, but the result is fair,” he concluded.
The series will be defined next Sunday at the Olympic University. Cruz Azul seeks its tenth title; Pumas, the eighth.
