Two helicopters collided in the air over Rio de Janeiro this morning. The accident, which occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time, left six people dead, as confirmed by firefighters. They were all traveling in the aircraft.
One of the ships exploded upon impact with the ground in the Recreio neighborhood, southwest of the city. It fell on a parking lot of electric cars, causing a fire that burned around twenty vehicles. The causes of the incident are still unknown.
Among the deceased are the American singer Oliver Tree and the Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prim Díaz, known as Gaspi, 23 years old. Oliver Tree was on tour: he performed in São Paulo last week and was scheduled to appear in Lisbon on July 1, CNN Brazil reported. The other victims are four passengers of the helicopter in which Tree and Gaspi were traveling, along with the pilot of that aircraft and the commander of the second helicopter.
The airspace of Rio de Janeiro is intense. From Copacabana beach you can see the aerial corridors over Guanabara Bay, where helicopters circulate constantly.
The parking lot where one of the helicopters fell belongs to an abandoned church and was rented by the Chinese electric car company BYD, according to local media G1.
