Farewell to Billy Álvarez
Guillermo “Billy” Álvarez, former president of Cruz Azul and former general director of the La Cruz Azul Cooperative, died this Saturday, May 30, at the age of 80. The news was confirmed by sources to El Universal, although his family has not yet issued an official position.
With his departure one of the most complex stages in the history of the celestial institution closes. Álvarez led the club for more than three decades, during which time La Maquina won the Liga MX title in Winter 1997, as well as several MX Cups and Concacaf trophies. However, his management was also marked by multiple lost finals and the frustration of fans who experienced constant sporting disappointments.
At the administrative level, Álvarez faced serious questions. In his last years, he was subjected to judicial proceedings for alleged financial irregularities and operations with resources of illicit origin. After several years on the run, he was arrested in 2025, a dark chapter in the club’s recent history.
His death puts an end to a controversial period for Cruz Azul, whose fans and management structure are currently going through a different stage.
